News Media Guild members are eligible for the Joe Beirne Scholarship program offered by our parent union, the Communications Workers of America. Beirne was the founding president of the CWA. (Note: this CWA scholarship is separate from NMG’s Patrick Sherlock scholarship, which will be offered again later this year. NMG members are eligible for both.)
Fifteen partial college scholarships of $3,000 each are being offered for the 2010-2011 school year. Part-time students, (less than 12 credits) would receive half of the scholarship money.

Meanwhile, the evaluation comments, intended to bolster performance, are clear and attainable in their goals.
Evaluations have been a useful tool when deciding promotions, transfers and merit pay.

(NEW YORK, Feb. 10, 2010) – The News Media Guild reached agreement Wednesday on wage reductions at United Press International aimed at preventing a shutdown of U.S. text operations. The agreement calls for a 14 percent wage reduction with protections for lower-compensated employees, and four Guild-covered workers will be laid off.
Most managers will be departing and others will face wage reductions.
