The News Media Guild and the Associated Press resolved a dispute involving the right to one week of paid leave when adopting a child.
Bill McCall, a newsman in the Portland, Ore., bureau, requested the leave based on this contract language: "After nine months of continuous employment, employees may take up to 18 months of parental leave-with pay for one week-surrounding the birth or adoption of a child."

The Associated Press will extend to the Technology Unit the following provisions when it seeks to reduce staff:
“When used in this Agreement, the term “seniority” means Company-wide length of service since an employee’s most recent date of hire. In the event of a reduction in force in a bureau, department or business location, the Employer will weigh an employee’s seniority, as well as his/her qualifications and skills, in accordance with the provisions of this Section in order to determine which employee(s) will be laid off.

The Associated Press improved its voluntary early retirement program offer by dramatically decreasing the retiree medical insurance rates for the editorial and technology units for employees under 65. The change is intended to entice more staffers to accept the offer.
