Apply Now for CWA Scholarships
09 Mar 2010

News Media Guild members are eligible for the Joe Beirne Scholarship program offered by our parent union, the Communications Workers of America. Beirne was the founding president of the CWA. (Note: this CWA scholarship is separate from NMG’s Patrick Sherlock scholarship, which will be offered again later this year. NMG members are eligible for both.)

Fifteen partial college scholarships of $3,000 each are being offered for the 2010-2011 school year. Part-time students, (less than 12 credits) would receive half of the scholarship money.

Winners also receive second-year scholarships of the same amount contingent upon satisfactory academic accomplishment.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

At AP, EFE, and UPI, eligibility is restricted to Guild members and their spouses, children and grandchildren, including dependents of laid-off, retired and deceased members.

Applicants must be high school graduates or high school students who will graduate during the year they apply. Graduate and undergraduate students returning to school may also apply. Winners may pursue whatever courses they wish. No specific studies are required.

Although the scholarships are chosen by random drawing, a short, 250 word essay is required. It should be typed, double-spaced, in Microsoft Word format. You will upload it with the applicaton. The topic of this essay should be related to any aspect of the Labor Movement and how it has affected your life. For example: what role have unions played in your family or why are unions important. At the bottom of the essay, please include an additional statement about your academic major or a career objective, if you have one.

Prior winners may not reapply.

Applications must be received by March 31, 2010. They must be filed through CWA’s website. You will need the following information before filling out the web form in addition to your essay and major/career statement:
