News Media Guild Privacy Statement

Our Commitment To Privacy

As your representative, the News Media Guild may gain access to personal information which raises privacy concerns. We recognize the need to handle this information responsibly. This Privacy Statement explains our practices regarding the collection and use of personal information.

The Personal Information Governed by this Statement

This policy applies to the following Personal Information: home address; email address; phone number; Social Security number; medical information; race; gender; age; religion; identity of individuals involved in disciplinary matters; and compensation.

The Way We Use Personal Information

We use Personal Information for Guild purposes, including contract enforcement and collective bargaining with your employer. We do not share this information with outside parties except as needed to properly represent you.

We are required to provide your contact information to our parent unions, TNG and CWA, as a matter of obligation under the TNG and CWA constitutions. The CWA may share personal information with other labor organizations such as the AFL-CIO, Union Privilege, etc., if it believes that you may be interested in receiving their communications. We encourage you to review CWA’s privacy policy at www.cwa-union.org/privacy-policy. Should you wish to opt out of these third party communications, please contact CWA as directed in their privacy policy.

Personal health information released by you or by AP pursuant to your written release will be used by Guild staff, in consultation with legal counsel, in a sensitive manner, and only as necessary for grievance handling and proper representation.

We will not disclose Social Security numbers to third parties.

NMG officers and Committees, such as the Human Rights Committee and the Health and Safety Committee, use Personal Information regarding race, gender, age, religion, and compensation to ensure proper contract enforcement, to assist in collective bargaining, and for membership recruitment. The Human Rights Committee may, for example, use data regarding race, gender, age, and compensation to ensure fair treatment at the workplace. Reports released to the membership or to the public will contain only aggregate date and will not reveal personally identifiable information.

It is essential that NMG members remain informed of our efforts on their behalf. We will continue to report in WireReport, on our Web site, and on ShopTalk, the status of contract negotiations, contract grievances, and the details of monetary settlements achieved on behalf of members.

If requested, we will not report the identity of anyone involved in a disciplinary grievance unless the case is litigated by the Guild. Such information may be divulged to the Executive Committee, Representative Assembly, members of the grievance committee, and others involved in processing employee grievances or making decisions whether to litigate such cases.

We and our members have a vital interest in understanding the levels of compensation paid to all bargaining unit members, as it is an essential element of collective bargaining. We will continue our policy of not releasing information regarding an individual’s merit pay or overall earnings to the membership, but such information may be used in grievance handling, in making litigation decisions, and as part of summaries. Information needed to enforce contract terms, such as who is being paid contractually negotiated differentials or awarded prized assignments, may be shared with the membership for collective bargaining or grievance processing purposes.

Our Commitment To Data Security

We have appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard the Personal Information we obtain, and to ensure its appropriate use.
